Most stories in the press report that this was done using 'special software'. In fact unknown perpetrators used the standard 'lawful interception capabilities' that the company has to provide, bypassed (allegedly) the authorisation process to activate the interfaces, and then listened to the conversations that were redirected to some pay-as-you-go mobile phones.
